La Pommeraye

The local area

The area offers a wealth of cultural experiences as well as many sporting activities catering for all age groups.

The nearby seaside town of Granville has something to offer the whole family. Apart from its beautiful beaches there are interesting museums to explore, including the house and gardens of Christian Dior, now a museum. There is also a good selection of restaurants and shops. A day trip to Jersey is also possible by ferry from the port. Golfers have the choice of two golf courses locally, a 9 hole course at Brehal and the 18 hole course at Granville.

Villedieu-les-Poeles is famous for the manufacture of copper pans and bells and its museums offer an interesting insight into this longstanding industry. The town also has a large weekly market every Tuesday and an indoor swimming pool. A popular family outing is to the zoo at Champrepus, on the main road between Granville and Villedieu-les-Poeles.

The large towns of Avranches and Coutances are only a short drive away and provide a wide range of shops, hypermarkets and restaurants.

Slightly further away are the D-Day beaches and the Bayeux tapestry. The region's most famous monument Mont Saint- Michel, dating back to the Middle Ages is also easily accessible. The Cite de la Mer at Cherbourg offers visitors a fascinating insight into the history and technology of submarine exploration. It also houses a huge aquarium.

Other recommended excursions include the North coast of Brittany with its picturesque rocky coves; the port of St Malo, where you can walk around the ramparts of the old town; Rennes which offers excellent shopping and also still has a quaint medieval quarter; and Fougeres with its impressive chateau.

For local food shopping, the nearest large supermarket is 5 minutes drive away. The nearest small town, La Haye-Pesnel, under 10 minutes drive away, has banks, post office, supermarket and a selection of small shops.
